Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
I know that these are not Estonian bears, but the 16 orphaned black bears at the Wildlife Center of Virginia have been moved to a brand new building which has open air sides and sunshine and a whole lot more room for them to romp and play. Usually at least one of the cameras will be on the bears, and often they both show the bears. The new location has two large rooms connected by a walkway for the bears to run through -- there is a camera in each room.

Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
Oops, they just announced that the bear cam could be off-line for a few hours and would come back on at 4:30 Eastern US time, which is around midnight in Estonia. But it should be up and running for any interested Europeans all weekend. (But be careful, it can be addictive watching them play.)
Here is some information and pictures of the move yesterday. The first 8 cubs were moved last week, the remaining 8 on Thursday.

Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
If anyone is up late tonight, check out the Wildlife Center of Virginia's bear cam: http://wildlifecenter.org/critter-corner/critter-cam-1 It should be light for a couple more hours to see the cam.
The cubs have grown a lot since the last pictures I posted back in August. In a couple of weeks, their new 3-acre enclosure in the woods should be ready for them to explore and stay until sometime in January when they will be released back into the wild.
Today, a hammock made from fire hoses was hung for them. It is hysterical to watch them swinging and playing after being tested by the staff!

I cannot wait to see "our" boars, but I will be checking this cam now to at least see Alutaguse boars. Thanks for letting us know they are there!

Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
Today is moving day for 4 of the 17 orphaned bear cubs that the Wildlife Center of Virginia has been caring for since last May.
In August, they were first moved into an open air enclosure...
... and today they are ready to begin a new life in a totally outdoor area that has was finally completed on Monday. http://wildlifecenter.org/black-bear-complex
These are the first two waiting to be moved.
This is the plan for the day, which started about an hour ago. http://wildlifecenter.org/critter-corner/patient-updates/black-bear-cubs-2013-update-moving-day
I'll keep you posted as the day goes by.

Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
First two bears that were sedated are getting a medical exam before being moved to the new bear complex. (All photos are from the Wildlife Center of Virginia cams.)
(update: Both are males. One of them is #13-0470. http://wildlifecenter.org/critter-corner/current-patients/black-bear-cubs-13-0469-and-13-0470
He came to the center weighing 3.6 kg and now weighs 62.8 kgs!

Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
Both bears were given an injection to counteract the anesthesia and help them wake up more quickly.
One has already found a cozy den to move into!
Back to playing and climbing trees!
There are now 2 more bears in a similar transition area. All 4 will be observed for a while today, and if all seems well (which it does seem to be) a gate will be opened and they can roam into the larger area. They will be observed there until tomorrow morning to make sure the few facility is escape-proof before moving the other 13 bears!

Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
The circled area is where the four cubs are right now. Later today they will be released to the larger area outside the holding pens. Each of the three large fenced in spaces are about 1.5 acres. It will be quite a reunion when all the rest are brought over tomorrow!
The plan is to keep the bears for another couple of weeks, and then release them back into the wild in groups of 2-3 over various areas of the state. Way too many of them to release in one spot as a large group!

Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
Cool! Very interesting information! The areas look like the ones that exist in Portugal and Spain for the breeding of Iberian Lynx
Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
How I would love to see them! As we have no bears we only could
put some sheep in a pen like that but nobody would come to
see them and it is not at all necessary to do such...so we are
looking around us to see what moves in the fields...
Today I heard on tv that we get colder weather...often it happened
to get colder here some weeks after America had a very cold winter period..maybe it will be the same now: I really do hope!
Nice that you posted the bears story!

Re: Alataguse Bear Cam 2013
Excitement and disappointment both at the same time!
(By the way, half of the bear cubs from my pictures above have successfully been released back into the wild and the other half should be released within the next week or so. However, the first orphaned bear cub of the spring was found yesterday and brought in to the wildlife center to be fed and cared for. And so it begins again... )
