Re: Grey Seal webcam
It was actually a funny situation....
Juha was asking me what animals there is to be seen - he saw only all empty snow and ice and water.....
I told him about the seals and the foxes and said that sometimes we have even seen eagles. I think he did not believe me
At the very same moment this eagle came . It was so fast so Juha hardly saw it but I already got a pic..... hehehehe.

A Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus) caught and killed and ate a bird (something like a plover I think)

Re: Grey Seal webcam
The gull came flying from the background and landed on the shore line (still behind that "wall" of ice/snow). Soon another gull joined her. Yet I couldn´t see what they were doing there (now I guess they tried to drown the bird there).
Then the 1st gull pulled a dark moving (flapping wings) something a bit closer to the cam (there is not much to see in the pics but the dark something below the gull is the bird)
Then a hooded crow came and the gull continued pecking the bird (the dark something left of the gull the bird is)
It lasted a few minutes to kill the bird. But as soon as it was dead it was rather quickly eaten by the first gull.

At first I also thought it was a fish (that wing flapping seemed like the flapping of the tail of a fish) but it was a bird for sure Once I could cleary see a wing (it had the shape that is typical for plovers) and once I saw a white tail.

Re: Grey Seal webcam
We learn every day
Copied from Wikipedia:
Great Black-backed Gulls are opportunistic and get most of their food from scavenging (refuse at times comprising more than half of their diet) and capturing fish. However, unlike most Larus gulls, they are highly predatory and frequently hunt and kill any prey smaller than themselves, behaving more like a raptor than a typical larid gull. They frequently rob other seabirds of their catch and have been known to follow feeding Humpback Whales, Porbeagles and Northern Bluefin Tuna to catch fish driven to the surface by the larger animals. Great Black-backed Gulls are major predators at the nesting colonies of smaller seabirds, killing and eating eggs, chicks and adult birds. Atlantic Puffins, Common Murres, Herring Gulls, Common Terns, Roseate Terns, Manx Shearwaters, Horned Grebes and Laughing Gulls are regularly culled by the Great Black-backs. They generally target chicks since they are easily found, handled, and swallowed. They can swallow puffins, terns or small ducks whole.

Re: Grey Seal webcam
looking these cormorants i got the feeling of childhood, where i went to the river in morning and sat on a large stone in the water and enjoyed the sun glittering on the water and quiet murmur of water and bird song
