We missed the first flight of Camellia last night -- she was 4 days earlier than expected!

The second eaglet took off early this morning and was gone for about 45 minutes. Just the littlest has not flown yet--but soon!

Re: American Bald Eagle - Norfolk Botanical Gardens (Virginia)
I had not checked on the eagles for a while now, and was quite shocked at what happened last Sunday:
Two photographers noticed the eaglet in the canal that flows under the nest tree. When it became obvious that he could not get out on his own, one of the photographers jumped into the water to save the bird. The eagle experts on staff there examined him and determined that he was not injured -- just wet and tired.
He was put under a cage outdoors to dry off in the breeze and was then returned below the nest tree, but he was just too worn out to get back up to the nest.
To be continued.......

Re: American Bald Eagle - Norfolk Botanical Gardens (Virginia)
After spending the night in a nearby veterinary hospital, he was examined again in the morning and was found to be in excellent health with no injuries. He was returned to Norfolk Botanical Garden and released back into the wild on Monday. He was placed on a six-foot high perch to get him off the ground and after a few seconds of looking around and orienting himself he launched into the air and flew toward his nest.
He got home to the nest safe and sound -- but it is a mystery how he got into the water The local news channel said that he fell out of the nest, but the eagle experts strongly disagree with that explanation.

Re: American Bald Eagle - Norfolk Botanical Gardens (Virginia)
Bisky, good morning and thank you for telling us what happened!
That was a rather brave photographer to get into the water and
save the bird..they have such long and powerfull nails.
Life can be rather dangerous for all young birds!

Re: American Bald Eagle - Norfolk Botanical Gardens (Virginia)
Yes, I just read that this morning! It is a shame that they are turning it off so soon -- the eaglets will still be around the nest. Smartly, the eagles in that part of the country take a long time to finally leave the nest. The parents still leave food while the little ones learn how to hunt and get along on their own before leaving.
(Maybe our little black storks would do better if they did not have to leave and begin to migrate so soon after learning to fly. I suppose the climate does not afford them that luxury.) Even once these eaglets leave, they do not settle far away. The mild winters and the plentiful fish keep them in the area.

Without Ergee's reminder, I had totally forgotten to check on the bald eagles this season -- it looks like they got started without us: they moved to a new nest and have three eggs already!
Here is the link to the web cam (although it seems to be temporarily out of order):

This is a review of their activities during the winter:

It seems that a tree branch fell on the power line that connects the camera, so this is just a temporary interruption.
