The Storm Dagmar....
... is approaching Finland from the west. South west Finland (where we are) will get winds with even 35 m/s in the gusts. Most probably we will have power cuts that can last long.
Estonia will get its fair share of the wind too. So if you notice that the cam is not working, it is probably due to power cuts.
We will manage fine even without power. The temperature is above 0C. We can keep the house warm with firewood and also cook on the wood stove in the kitchen. We are filling water in buckets because we have a drilled well, 100 m deep, so without electricity for the pump down there we cannot get water.
I cannot remember when it has last happend that we, because of strong winds, are told not to drive if it can be avoided

What a terrible present from nature on Christmas! Take care -- I hope conditions will not be as bad as predicted.

I hope so too.... but when I read about what it looks like in Norway and Sweden now ... I don't think so. They say that it is worse than anything in over 30 years. The Swedish police are telling people to stay inside and in some parts of Sweden all train traffic is closed.

Re: The Storm Dagmar....
When is it expected to hit your area? It always seems worse in the night when you cannot see outside. At least you were able to have your Christmas festivities before it hits. And lots of leftover food???

Re: The Storm Dagmar....
It will hit during the early morning hours so when we wake up it is already here.
Yes, we have lots of food - no worries there! And lots of candles too!
My biggest worry is a big old birch in front of the house. It won't fall on the house but the coop is in the danger zone....
Trees will fall over - that's for sure, as we have no frost in the ground yet that would help keeping the roots in place.

Bring the chickens inside -- http://chickendiapers.com/
I hope that you will be able to get some sleep tonight and not lay awake waiting for it all to start.

Re: The Storm Dagmar....
HAHAHA!! I have an emergency plan for the chickens! In case of a long power cut when it is very cold outside, we will use the dog crates we have for shows. They will be placed in the sauna and the sauna will be kept warm (not hot tho, we don't want baked chickens...). They will not be too happy to be placed in cages but they will not be suffering - the cages are made for labradors! This is one reason why I don't want to have more than max 15 birds - at the moment we have 10 chicken and 2 roosters.
I will probably sleep ok - and if I don't - what else is there to do when you don't have power The light from torches and candles are not enough for reading even and that goes for the daylight too.

Re: The Storm Dagmar....
Back here after a 2 hour power cut.
The big old birch is down
It did not fall on the coop but as far as we can see it has damaged the fence for quite a bit.
It is not possible to sleep - this is scary!!!
For the first time ever I fear that our roof tiles will fly away

Re: The Storm Dagmar....
We are ok so far. Still no power but Juha's iPad has some battery left. We have had coffee and porridge cooked on the wood stove. TG for the woodstove!!!!!!
Anna and Timo have no power either but they cooked coffee and porridge in the holiday caravan, that has gas LOL. Timo will come here and help Juha to cut the birch and mend the fence and gate, that are damaged.
The worst part of the storm should be over in a couple of hours but it might take long to get the power...
Interesting boxing day...

Re: The Storm Dagmar....
Christmastree before electric power break!
Caysa just called me on telephone and asked me to tell to all of you that
she is doing fine, but electricity failures are going on and she can't
use the pc, nor the phone any longer...but she and Juha are safe!
There is no danger as long as they stay in and close to the house but
as there is no light she only can knit socks at the moment. ( maybe you can order a pair of those real special Christmas-socks... .
Reading is almost impossible, even in the daytime alsmost too dark. And if all this lasts longer the food in the freezer will be spoilt. Hubby will have to go hunting again then!
So, please, don't be upset..she can't write in LLL now but they are ok, with hens, dogs, cat and all the other members of the mixed family! She still could laugh a lot in this phonecall, she is optimistic!
As soon as possible she will pop in! But also a battery charger for
a phone will not work now...
Can you really imagine how it is to be without electric stream nowadays??
Between 15.00 and plm 21.00 (Dutch time) I will not be at home
if there might be something urgent : 0031 6 21488100...
Have a nice, quiet and merry 2nd Christmasday!

Re: The Storm Dagmar....
A bit late I saw hat Caysa had sent me a sms at 8.12 pm (NL time)
Caysa's text:
"Hi, probably power cut in Ilmatsalu too... Here all is the same, no power and only occasional mobile connections. The wood stove is a blessing, we have washed even the hair with warm water! Today we bought a battery radio to be able to get some news.
Best greetings to everyone! Caysa."
Good to know that they are safe and do know how to make the
best out of all this. And that they are grateful for a bit of warm water..
As soon as we miss simple things we learn how spoilt we often are!
And enjoy it much more when the "normal life" begins again...
Good night to all of you!

Hello! Still no power... And it will probably last for long. It is like a war zone here, unbelievable. The mobile network is so bad too. It came on for a while now so i write this. We are trying to send this ipad to helsinki today to get it charged, only 10 percent power left.
We manage ok but it is so hard without communications.
I will let you know more when i can. Bye bye.

Re: The Storm Dagmar....
Caysa phoned me and told that circumstances did not change yet.
No electricity, Timo came with a kind of horsetrailer and a freeze box in it
to get meat and other food from the freezer and bring it to friends
in Helsinki where there is electr.
A neighbour not so far from Caysa will charge her i-pad with the
electr. he gets from the agregate (he uses it for the pigs food aso).
In the evening she will try to get the connection to LLL!
She sends her greetings, everything is ok but is getting annoying now!
From tomorrow till plm 5th of Januar I'll not be at home, at Genna's
but don't know if I can use the PC..
Tonight I'm still here...
Bye for now!
