Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
Great that another stag has arrived!!
Red stags are rather peaceful outside the mating season. Now in winter they don´t want to waste energy after all. Usually there are only minor fights on the feeding areas - even if there are 50 or 100 Red Deer at the same time.
In addition an old/big stag often has a young/small stag as a "friend". The young one usually shows up first - the old (clever) one follows a bit later. That way the old one often can avoid danger...

Very interesting, Ricky. The young one did, indeed, show up first.
Is it common for a single doe to follow a stag around and feed together? I never see that happening with the white-tailed deer in my yard.

You´re right, this behaviour is quite uncommon among Red Deer.
A young stag usually leaves his mother in the 2nd year of his live - but some stags stay with their mother until they are 3 or 4 years old...
Mr. Magnificent is older, though. Something like 8 years probably. Outside the mating season, stags of this age either roam alone or are accompanied by a young friend or they form a small group (without females). Of course there are always exceptions...
Close to feeders the behaviour of animals can sometimes be untypical anyway...

Thanks for the prompt answer!
One of the LK forum members mentioned that there is/was a problem with some wolves in Saaremaa killing sheep. I wonder if that is why the female is staying near the large buck?

Hi all. I think she comes to eat, so there is no choice. And we don't know if it is only one. We only saw her in the back, and most of the time only a head. It can be more than one

Might be.
She might feel safer - but I don´t think the he would actually defend her...

Ricky, shouldn't the red deer loose their antlers? In Portugal it happens in March, I don't know what happens in the north of Europe
Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
Yes I think the timing is quite the same all over Europe...
The old stags are usually the first to shed their antlers. Some of them might already have done so.
Young stags often keep their antlers until April - yearlings even until May.

20.59 CT.
Barking sounds go on..fox? But they seem to be stronger. Some dogs are
also barking rather far away.

2 deer in the background. It´s still more or less daylight...
Hard to get a proper pic, though.

Someone is there. In the dark. Not possible to see if it's a "he" or a "she"
Oh, ok It's a "she"

Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
There is a red deer on the left side. But I couldn't understand yet which one it is
Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
Yes I think you're right BiskyBisky wrote:It appears to be the young male.
He gave room to the female and is now near the tree
Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
It can be another one. But it's true that there is a step because even from Mr Magnificent we only see the antlers when he is behind the hay
Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
Another one arrived. Is also in the back. And came around to the left side. And she is leaving. On the last days there was a light in the back over the hay but I cannot see it now
