Today is...
Finland's Independence Day!
The national festivities of Independence Day, begin by raising the flag in Tähtitorni hill, in Helsinki. This is then followed with the festive divine service at the Cathedral of Helsinki, where by tradition, the President is also present. In the evening the President receives guests for the gala occasion which is held at the President's Palace in Helsinki. Approximately 2000 people are invited to this banquet every year, and war veterans attend as the guests of honour. The event is broadcast on television, and it is a very popular happening which collects millions of Finns in front of the TV every year.
Starting at 18.35 (Finnish time) you can watch the President's banquet here: http://areena.yle.fi/live
Especially the first 1½ - 2 hours is what all Finns watch . This is when the guest arrive and all and everyone are shaking hands with Mrs President and her husband. The reporters will tell as many names as the ever can and also the ladies' dresses will be commented - that is the most popular subject in the newspapers tomorrow

If he was invited - I would have to go too... sheeeeeesh!!!!!
It might happen one day but I hope it is not in the near future.... It sure isn't my thing to attend such a happening but on the other hand you cannot really say no either.....

Re: Today is...
Helsinki has never had this much snow before at this time of the year. And at the moment Helsinki has more snow than Lapland
When Juha was on his way home from work yesterday he had to reverse down one block because there was nowhere else to go. Only the main streets have 2 lanes, in the smaller streets cars cannot pass each other. It is a complete mayhem in our capitol... People are adviced not to go by private cars because there is no street parking. If you dont have a parking hall spot - use the buses and the trams....
