BISKY'S BOBSLED ADVENTURE

I promised Ophi last week that I would post some more pictures, so here goes!

After the Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2002, the Olympic Training Park was open to the public to try the ski long jump, luge, or bobsled. This is a picture of my good friend, LuAnn, who always seems to talk me into doing crazy things. Our families vacationed together for several years in February so our husbands and sons could ski and skateboard, and we ladies could lunch, shop, and go on adventures. I believe it was 2004 when we decided this would be fun to try -- I don't know what we were thinking!





This is me checking out the track before we went to the bobsled center to spend about an hour learning about bobsleding before we tried it out for ourselves. I am smiling because I had not yet read and signed the legal waiver that was required before we could go out on the ice. It was filled with a lot of scary "D" words: dismemberment, decapitation, and death. They assured us that none of those things had happened to public, but they were required to inform us of the possible consequences of our foolishness!

This is one of the bobsleds that went before our turn to go. The two passengers get to sit in the middle. In the front is the driver, who -- much to my horror -- steers by pulling on two ropes to guide us through the turns. In the back is the brakeman, who hopefully stops the sled at the finish.



The only equipment that they gave us was a helmet.



We are almost ready to go! Our brakeman was an American and the driver was from Cuba. Both were hopeful to qualify for the 2006 Olympic team. It is a terribly small space to try to fit in 4 people. I found myself sitting in back of the Cuban whom I had never met before with my legs wrapped around his waist! My friend LuAnn had her legs wrapped around me, and so on.

After we were all jammed into the sled, the other people who worked there pushed us out onto the track. Thankfully we did not have to run and push and then jump in like the real bobsledders do!

And off we went!



The body of the sled is mostly fiberglass, so it is not very substantial. There was no padding--we sat on a wooden plank and slid into the hard sides of the sled as it took the curves. (My upper arms and shoulders were black and blue for a long time.) The track had 15 curves and we were told in training not to even try to count them because because we would lose track after the fifth one -- I only counted the first 4 ! The speeds are between 70 and 80 miles per hour for the visitors and there were 5 G's of force pushing against our bodies in the curves. I think they said it was similar to dropping from a 40-story building in under a minute. These next two pictures are of other sleds, but we did the exact same thing on our run.)

Finally, 56.03 seconds later, we made it to the end all in one piece and still smiling!



But I would never, ever do it again!

It has been a few years ago, but I am sure I was thinking that four curves were quite enough!

It is not so much. The European rink is bigger. In the Russian national team many ice-hockey players playing in NHL, they got used to the smaller rink better. And the Russian national team currently world champion!
