We also had an interesting effect last night. It was getting a little bit colder, going down from 0C. The air was full of frozen fog which refelected the moonlight. The visibility was good on the ground tho, just before I went to bed hubby decided to go and "watch" deer at the hide. Hes been keeping his eye on one special stag.... Oh, is hunting for deer allowed in Finland also during the night?

Hunting during night is okay for me... And full moon + snow + warm is really great indeed!

But in both Austria and Germany hunting for deer and birds (apart of a few local exceptions) is forbidden. They fear to make the animals even shyer when hunting during night or shoot "wrong" (too young/too big/too old or whatever) animals - there are very strict hunting limits here.
If you allowed to shoot a stag that is younger than 3 years and you shoot a 5-year-old you can get in trouble. The same thing is when you shoot a strong and big young or middle-aged stag. As it is now there is no limits about how old the animals are. Only limits are actually the motherhood times. Any female animal that has babies shall be left alone. Unwritten law is also that you never shoot a young animal in front of it's mother........

Unnatural lights are not allowed and you cannot shoot from a car.

That´s quite different here. You have to shoot fawns - and since they hardly ever are alone you shoot them in front of the doe...

When you own a hunting area in Austria or Germany you get a list of which animals you can shoot per year.
It´s quite complicated so I´ll put an exemple here...
Let´s assume 10 Roe Deer are allowed to shoot in the hunting area. Then you will probably be allowed to shoot something like 3 bucks (1 old, 1 middle-aged, 1 young - the middle-aged and the young buck should be smaller than average bucks of their age), 3 does, 4 fawns....

If you shoot much more you are in trouble. If you shoot much less you are also in trouble. If you shoot animals you were not allowed to shoot you are also in trouble.

It sounds really complicated but in reality you rarely face a problem. Also because it´s difficult to supervise which animals you shoot (in case of you really did something "wrong" )
