It appears that our little Volli has packed his bags and moved to Saarema! He is having fun tonight on the carrot pile.

Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
It was just pure luck that I saw him. I was just turning the camera on and noticed a little speck moving across the ice. By the time I realized what it was and got the camera started, he was running around on the carrots. I wish I could have gotten his whole journey on video. I think if I had the cam on for some time, I would not have noticed him either.

Mr. Magnificent has already lost his antlers
but it is interesting to see that the others maintain the respect
Some pigs in the snow (last night there was a badger)

Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
Hello, good evening! I just was looking at LK to see
Mr Magnificent and posted some words there.
I don't know if it always goes like tonight, but I think:
it is:
-------------------
Really interesting to see how Huubert, Mr. Magnificent,
behaves: His position seems to be the highest spot of the- ground on the territory : just before one of the 2 trees coming from the left side.
As soon as somewhere some troubles arise he lifts his
head and should that not be enough to calm the others down
he goes in their direction and in almost every case they
leave!!! Even without his enormous and now disappeared
antlers he is: The Chief!
His head is never lower than the heads of the other (upset) red deer!
What a wonderful behaviour!
---------
Where could he have learned that....Garina, do you know
that? Or Ricky???
Have a nice evening!

True Red Deer have a distinct social hierarchy. The boss is the boss - the others usually don´t dare to challenge him.
Same is with the females btw... Usually the most experienced hind leads a group. But if her fawn dies for whatever reason her social status is gone immediately. Either a different hind takes over the leadership or the group splits up.

Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
We thought that there was respect to Mr. Magnificent and the other older red deer but it seems that some of the younger are not so respectful...
Those younger red deer that are all the time fighting and chasing away the youngest, also defy the older ones. Two nights ago I saw a red deer "standing"
and payed attention to see what was happening.
It was 2 red deer fighting
And the same last night
The "poor" no antlers red deer have to impose him/themself with the fore feet

It doesn't seem to be the teenagers
More the young adults that think they are "the best"
Re: Red Deer Cam (Saarema Island)
I didn't knew that there were wolfs in Saaremaa...
Last night there were some red deer that sudenly ran away and it was possible to see an animal passing in the back and a second one just after. They were not foxes. Wolfs or dogs...
