I will post more pics soon - in Hiiumaa the last two days had bad WiFi, not enough to get it done.
And when we came home I had to find a new screen. But this is taken care of - I have a new one since late last night.

Re: We are going to Hiiumaa !!
When we drove off the ferry it was raining, no, it was RAINING
After a while it stopped and I took a pic of an old farm house from inside the moving car.
The drive to Kärdla was 20 minutes and very soon I spotted the hotel sign
After checking in I took a pic of the hotel.

Re: We are going to Hiiumaa !!
We checked our room and then we left to see the Tahkuna tuletorn / lighthouse.
Just before arriving there we saw a sign about a military museum.
Juha wanted to go there, of course!
This old sign was about the first thing I saw inside. All the veapons and stuff there did not really interest me so I went outside instead.
I took pics of these very tall mast - they were used during the WWII.
This wagtail followed me wherever I went

(I added one wagtail pic above, don't know why it was lost)
Yes, the iron curtain was present everywhere!!! Wherever you walk in the forests or on the beaches, you will see bunkers and old watchtowers.... Also many buildings are from that time - concrete structures, that has this typical sovjet look.

Then we drove to the lighthouse. First we walked to the very tip of the peninsula to see this bell that is a monument in memory of children lost at see when Estonia sank.

Re: We are going to Hiiumaa !!
Here is the lighthouse it self and some history and stories around it, if you are interested.
Tahkuna lighthouse, situated on the northern tip of Hiiumaa, was completed in 1875. It was constructed of prefabricated cast iron parts assembled according to what was called the Gordon’s system to make transport easier. Construction work was said to have been a breeze. At the same time a lighthouse was built at Ristna as well. According to some stories, parts for the two lighthouses were switched, so Ristna lighthouse is now slightly smaller and Tahkuna tower is taller, although it was planned the other way round. Tahkuna tower is approximately 42.5 high, Ristna tower is about 30 m.
Legends and stories
According to one story once thought to be a fact but now considered legend, a Russian soldier jumped from the tower as he was afraid of the Germans. He later acquired a name - Nikolai Chizh - and status as Russian war hero, the last soviet "defender" of the island.
There are very many war stories about Tahkuna and it is quite difficult to establish which of them really took place. Historians have still not agreed how many soldiers were taken as prisoners of war here, and how many of them managed to escape by boat. Numerous battles have left traces here. Sawmills regularly reject timber from this area since shrapnel embedded in tree trunks destroys machinery.

Re: We are going to Hiiumaa !!
From Tahkuna we drove on a tiny little road to Lehtma - to see the harbour there. Just before we got there we saw this - an abandoned bar - no more beer served here
Then we arrived at the tiny harbour and as most of the many harbours around the island it is also serving as border crossing station and customs. As youhave maybe noticed I do like SIGNS

Re: We are going to Hiiumaa !!
How can you eat garlic bread when you don't like garlic?? I suppose
it is in the flour, or??
It seems to be a very quiet and gloomy island, what attracts you enough to visit it another time?
Interesting pictures, pity that you did not visit the museum ..

Re: We are going to Hiiumaa !!
It was interesting to see so many signs in Estonian and English. More and more signs in the U.S. are in English/Spanish to accommodate the many South Americans that cross our border illegally. I doubt that is the reason in Estonia.

The garlic bread is made of common dark bread. It is cut into slices/ sticks and fried in oil. Only at this point you add fresh garlic by sprinkling it all over the dish, as well as salt. The dip is usually some kind of sour cream, often naturelle but sometimes garlic can be added there too.
The nature on the island is amazing - as it has it long coast line and the inland is lush and green. It has a lot of plants that we don't have and I could spend months walking around in those woods or on those beaches.
Also the history is ever present (that is one reason why I did not spend time inside the museum, you can see evidence of the wars everywhere) and the habitants of the island are very aware of how precious they are to finally have their home here in peace. I was humbled by how they treat their island. It is not anything they take for granted.

All these signs are at border points - the waters around here are sailed by many people from Scandinavia and the Baltic states.
Away from the coast the signs are in Estonian and some road signs and village names can be seen in Swedish too as many Swedish people lived here before the invasion when they were deported to Ukraine....

Re: We are going to Hiiumaa !!
Now I understand: without garlic I also could eat the tasty looking bread and decide by myself how much garlic I could take..
Same about the island: The coastline looks very flat and dry and showing not soo much green plants, (salt and windy).
This image belongs to many drawings M.A. Koekoek made between
plm 1920 - 1940. Dutch coastline with the dunes, planted with helmgras.
I remember the beach-view hanging in the school classroom when I
started going to school!
And you will have seen the "beachgrass" specially planted to keep
the sand there where it belongs..the wind should not blow it away.
It is planted manuel...and here it is forbidden to walk in the helmgrass or destroy the
dunes planted with this "helm" as it is called here! Ammonphila arenaria.
You really have seen a lot of interesting things.
Have all the inhabitants been deported to Ukraine or only the Swedish?
I suppose and fear: all. Terrible times!
