Black Grouse Webcam lovers

Arne Ader:
There are not all that many black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) mating dance display sites that we can reach with a web camera. This time ELISA helps out with the transmission. The site in camera view is an old hayfield, now harrowed. Despite this the grouse come here, although it is a different matter whether they also come into reach of our camera. Before sunrise at least the sounds accompanying the mating dance display, or lek, should be there to hear. The display starts in early morning before sunrise, so it is most convenient for our American viewers. For us it is a part of a long-term commitment: this year we try to find out how and with which technology it should be undertaken.
At other times there is the trilling of larks and the voices of other spring-time birds of open landscapes. Our apologies if there might be little to watch but without reconnaissance, battle shouldn’t be undertaken, and without observant watchers the results would be poor.

How cool, more cameras to watch
Happily this one is a morning cam!!

Have any of you seen the Grouse play? It is quite funny to watch, they are so very serious. We can see it every now and then around here. But as Ader said, it is early morning business and you would have to be hiding in the playground long before the birds come.
I hope we can see them with the help of this cam!!

Some pics of these birds:

In Holland they call the dance of the black grouse cock: bolderen.
The animals are very excited then and see and hear hardly something...

In 1997 there were on the Holterberg in the province Overijssel
32 cocks and 22 hens.
2007: 15 cocks and 11 hens
2009: 12 cocks and 14 hens.

And yet there is a road sign that warns for fly overs: the black grouse! A bit too optimistic I think, but you should not drive
fast there...it is a very beautiful area!

This sign is actually very good!! Yesterday we almost collided with a male grouse!!
It flew so low, that it would have hit the windscreen if we had been driving any faster....

The lapwing, Vanellus vanellus! In Holland the bird is called: kievit,
they shout their own name! kievit..kievit..wiet..wiet.

The nest is prepared by the cock, he makes with his bill and his chest some holes in the gras or in the earth, he shows them to his wife and she
decides which one will be "the" nest where she will lay the eggs.
A "full" nest has 4 eggs that lay there with the "tips" pointing to the
centre of the nest. If crows, gulls or magpies fly in the neighbourhood they will be chased away by both parents. If a fox or other predator comes (or human being) the hen flies by running away from the nest and will try to lure the ennemi by acting as if she is wounded and cannot fly..so she hopes to ban the danger..
The cock can make salto's in the air... In former years people went searching for the eggs, the first egg in the country was offered to the queen, untill it was refused and forbidden to search the eggs after a certain date. There are so few birds left due to the chancing
of the meadows, the fields and the many roads that are built, even in nature-reserves.
The farmers controll the fields they have to plough first and if there are nests they put sticks
in the earth around the nest so that they don't overrule the nest with their tractors.
Last night I heard the "kievit-calls" in this cam even round midnight, now there are larks singing, crows calling and lapwing-calls!
