You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but this is not something that is usually celebrated in the United States. Are cake and presents involved like on one's birthday?

Re: Name Days today!
Thank you, Thank you!!
Here in the country side when it is the name day of your first name, you really need to prepare! You will get visitors! You don't invite them - they come. In towns this does not happen anymore - at least not often. A name is something that everyone knows about you. A birthday is not as easy to remember.
And yes, you need to have cakes and other goodies ready and the coffee pot has to be hot all day. Little presents are brought - nothing huge, only a little something.
But when it is your middle name.... then you can just enjoy it yourself.
Name days are widely celebrated especially in Europe.

I think that in USA there is such a mix of people and cultures that it would be hard to have a name day calender that would fit everybody.

Thanks for the explanation--yours was much more interesting than wikipedia! It sounds like a lovely custom--I'm always in favor of anything that promotes a get together with goodies and presents
I hope your name day was wonderful

Christi Himmelfahrt was 8 days ago actually. But maybe it´s different when it´s connected with name days - I don´t know.

That's what I thought too... As far as I know that day is always 40 days after Easter...
But have a look!!!: http://calendar.zoznam.sk/nameday-enathor.php
If you point at the 21st.... it will also tell you that is Christi Hf. .............hmm????

Re: Name Days today!
I don´t know either. Maybe there´s a double meaning of "Christi Hf"? (the church holiday day on the one hand and the name day on the other?)

Re: Name Days today!
I think there's a mistake in that calender! "Christi Hf" is only once and it is 40 days after Easter. Depending on when Easter is the date can vary, of course. But it is not today, that's for sure. And I should know.... my father was a priest

Have a look at this calender - looks better here.

Hi all
In Portugal there are no name days
But there is Christi Hf. It was last week. In Azores, the Portuguese Islands they have party all the week related with that.
